The States

I know this isn't the most interesting thing to blog about, but it helps me stay on track and keep a record of what we've accomplished in regards to homeschooling. At our co-op, the kids are taking a class about the 50 states, so at home, we are also working on memorizing the capitals of each state. So far, we've gotten capitals for Michigan, Hawaii, Kansas, Oregon, Florida, and Oklahoma down.
This morning Tim and the kids worked on making a small map of the US to scale in order to transfer it on to a big white tablecloth. We'll draw the country and state outlines on that and then add the points of interest to each state as we learn about it.

This is totally interesting to blog about... How'd y'all draw the maps? Unless there is an artist amidst your family...I would imagine this to be a difficult task...and the map looks sooo nice!!

Liz, we did a little talk about ratio and scale, and Tim blocked off the smaller map into one inch squares and then transferred it to the bigger map where 12" = 1" and then we just took it a square at a time. LOL, we did end up with some "dead space" because we are NOT great artists, so we joke that we have the montana strip (gaza strip) and the missouri triangle (bermuda triangle). Somehow things just didn't quite match up there.... Some of the states, we let the kids draw, or dotted the lines in for them.

Oh yea, and we named it the "State of Confusion" instead of the United States....teehee!
Liz, I didn't know you went to school with Ela Hammond (just found out yesterday)! We should totally all get together sometime!
